How to Replace an audi new key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car can start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. If you experience any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially if they're an Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this component is an option.

5. Tachometer
