How to Replace an audi a3 replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

renault-logo-evolution.jpgIf this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the most effective method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, but i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

g28-car-keys-logo-white-green.pngThe fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

The signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, audi etron key especially if they're a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part would be an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues within your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your replacement audi a3 key audi tt key fob key fob (cool training) since it sends information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the engine of the car is turning. When this sensor fails, it could cause problems for the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It sends a signal via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU is then able to process this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This part is common across the audi key replacement cost uk 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find some good ones in wrecking yards.
